DRAUGHTSMEN: calls for no special remarks.

OFFICE BOYS - 1st GRADE: is for office boys who are intellig-

ent, energetic and reliable. In exceptional cases, if they

take up typing etc., and other easy clerical work they may be

promoted to Clerks 4th GRADE.

OFFICE BOYS - 2ND GRADE: covers all other office boys.

TELEPHONE OPERATORS - 1ST GRADE: is a rank only to be given

to employees in the Hong Kong Office.

TELEPHONE OPERATORS - 2ND GRADE: covers those working small

Exchanges at Outports. They are really Clerks 5th Grade.

There is no separate grade for Chinese typists and

stenographers, as almost without exception such men do

ordinary clerical work as well. A knowledge of stenography should be taken into consideration when grading a man, e.g., a man who is only a fair clerk but a first-rate stenographer

should certainly be classed as Clerk 1st Grade.

Special Notes:

Promotion from one class to another is always open to

employees.

If a man is employed who has already acquired experience with another firm he is given seniority in his grade.

Employees in any grade do not receive automatically the

maximum salary of that grade. Whether they receive the

maximum depends partly on the man's abilities and partly on the nature of the work: that is to say, a particular task may be included in a certain grade for convenience although its value is somewhat be low the level of that grade.
